7/17 Weekly Call to Action

Each week, we'll gather the week's most relevant advocacy actions, legislation, and events so that we can target our actions to have the most impact. We'll bring in happenings at the local, state, and national level from several sources so you can have a one-stop shop for your information and advocacy actions. If you come across an item to include in an upcoming Call to Action post, please send us a link through the Contact form on this site. Thanks for your advocacy!!

The Indivisible Front Range Resistance team has summed up the coming week quite nicely: "The WOLVES are descending on Denver this week. We need all hands on deck. We’ve got ALEC in town, we’ve got the Western Conservative Summit in town. We’ve got GARDNER IN TOWN. We’ve got a healthcare bill DELAYED but not dead. We’ve got a LOT of counter actions planned. We need you. Vive la resistance."

Call to Action - Do these things!

Local Actions

Attend one of the local events listed in the State Action section below to help increase visibility for the Indivisible cause!
There is a lot going on in Denver, and we need to make some noise and get our concerns heard. This is a critical week here in Colorado, and your presence is crucial to gaining the publicity and messaging that we need. Sign up for one of the events right now!

Learn more about some bills that will have actions soon! Beside healthcare, there are so many important bills coming down the pipeline. See the Upcoming Legislation section below for more information about bills like H.R. 3053: Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 (which would make Nevada the permanent sole repository for the nation's highly radioactive waste), S.1413: Teachers Are Leaders Act (which supports teacher training programs), and H. R. 2690: Agricultural Worker Program Act of 2017 (which represents progress toward better immigration reform for agricultural workers). There are a lot of policies being made at the moment

State Actions

From the tireless Indivisble Front Range Resistance team:

ACT ON HEALTHCARE: McConnell delayed the vote so Arizona Senator John McCain (net worth $20 million) can have taxpayer provided surgery. The longer this bill is forced into the light of day, the worse it looks. But it also gives McConnell time to make deals and get his votes in order. So we have to KEEP TALKING ABOUT IT. Remind people how bad this bill is for everyone in the healthcare system. And let our MOCs know that a vote for this bill will have consequences. You know what to do, call Gardner. And even better, give his office a visit - sign up here so that we can coordinate.

JULY 22 ENGAGE 2018 KICKOFF: Get ready to take off for the next pivotal stage of our movement. Get energized, network with activists, and be informed about how to be PART of a force to be reckoned with through 2018...and beyond. And it takes place in a fun bar! RSVP here to see speakers and invited guests - and make sure to sign up as space is limited!

JULY 19-21: ALEC. Hard to find a more detrimental organization to American democracy - learn about them here. What can you do? See below:

JULY 21-23: THE. WESTERN. CONSERVATIVE. SUMMIT. Gardner is speaking on Friday, 7/21. Tr*mp is invited, Pence is invited, Sessions, Pruitt. NO JOKE. Here is some info. We need people out protesting this thing. We have a few events planned:

  • Come and show support for the light show stylings of the Suede Light Brigade, who will be shining a giant message on the walls of the Hyatt on Friday evening to protest both ALEC and the Summit. Seriously - they will need a few of our people to come out and help them defend their presence in case mean people come to block out the lights. Details can be found at Indivisible Front Range Resistance's Facebook group, or just meet on corner of 14th and California at 8:30pm on Friday, July 21.
  • There’s a “People’s Motorcade” on Friday which requires CARS and DRIVERS. If you would like to know more about this action, please contact the Indivisible Front Range Resistance team.
  • Go to the #Coloradovalues protest of the summit on Friday, 11AM.

CARDBOARD CORY IN AUGUST. He’s got scheduled events on the books in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Greeley, Denver, Boulder, and Aurora. He’s going STATEWIDE on a listening tour in August. Will you come out to talk to him? We’ll be posting the full schedule soon. He WILL be in a neighborhood near you (and if he’s not, let’s get him there!)

National Actions

From the national Indivisible Guide team:

Dear Indivisibles,

It feels like everything is coming at us at once, doesn’t it? Russia collusion, anti-immigrant actions, attacks on Net Neutrality, dismantling of federal agency protections—I could go on. We’ve got a lot of resisting to do. But this week we need to focus. This week we have to apply our power where we have the most leverage—and that’s defeating RepubliCare. If we win on this ground in the next week, it makes it harder for Trump to win on any other front.

Why now? Three weeks ago we raised the alarm on RepubliCare, and local Indivisible groups across the country helped stopped it. Senate Majority Leader McConnell failed to get a vote before July 4th recess because of that constituent power. We’re raising the alarm again now because McConnell has announced he wants a vote as soon as possible. Nobody knows how this will go, which means we can indeed win this—this is what Indivisible was made for.

Breaking news. Note: As we were finalizing this email Saturday night (yes, we have no lives), news broke that one Republican Senator will unable to come to D.C. for votes this week. This very well may give us more time to apply pressure, but it is not a reason to delay pressure. This week, especially after the Congressional Budget Office score is released Monday, is a key opportunity to send a clear message to the Senate.

The strategy. Visits to local Senate offices send the clearest message to senators: we don’t want RepubliCare and we’re watching you. Our whole national network will be showing up together at their own local Senate offices for the first National Indivisible Day of Action this Tuesday, July 18th. In red states, blue states, and purple states—in every part of this country—we’ll be showing up to say NO.

Where things stand with RepubliCare

Tomorrow, the Congressional Budget Office is expected to come out with a new score of the bill. There could be some minimal changes in what the CBO says about this version of the bill versus the old one, which Republicans will try to spin as though the bill is “better.” But the fact is, whatever this new version of the bill looks like, we already know it will still be WAY WORSE than current law.

The first step in moving the bill forward is called the “motion to proceed,” and if McConnell gets 50 votes there, it’s very likely the bill will pass. If the motion to proceed succeeds, the final vote will take place very soon after.

The ask: Tell your Senators to vote NO on the motion to proceed. Your local pressure on Tuesday is key to making sure McConnell doesn’t get the 50 votes he needs to consider the bill.
