5/1 Weekly Call To Action

Each week, we'll gather the week's most relevant advocacy actions, legislation, and events so that we can target our actions to have the most impact. We'll bring in happenings at the local, state, and national level from several sources so you can have a one-stop shop for your information and advocacy actions. If you come across an item to include in an upcoming Call to Action post, please send us a link through the Contact form on this site. Thanks for your advocacy!!

Last week, Congress postponed a vote on the American Health Care Act and a spending bill. This week, we need to keep pressure on our representatives to resist harmful spending bill riders and attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act's important protections.

Call to Action - Do these things!

Local Actions

Attend a local postcard party and write to your representatives! One of our members, Jenny Devaud, is hosting a Postcard Party on Thursday May 4 from 7-8:30pm. This week is a great week to use postcards to tell your representatives what you think about the spending bill and the Affordable Care Act's replacement bill. Join the Indivisible Boulder Facebook group to find out more information about this valuable social event.

Learn about the impact of fracking in our community. Attend the Get the Frack Facts free conference hosted by Longmont ROAR on Saturday 5/6 8:30am-3pm at the Front Range Community College Longmont Campus to learn about technical dangers, health impacts, pipelines and legal considerations with fracking as it encroaches on our schools, homes, parks and churches. This conference features world- and nationally-recognized speakers who will help you understand the implications of local fracking decisions.

State Actions

From the Indivisible Front Range email:

Call your representatives and tell them to oppose SB17-071: Early Voting Polling Stations Decreased, which would cut early polling locations by half and cut the hours they are open. This bill has been laid over till 5/11/17 so it appears it will be killed, but make sure your reps know that we don't want this bill to move forward.

Attend a committee hearing for SB17-281: Hold Government Accountable Sanctuary Cities on May 3rd at 1:30. We strongly oppose this bill, and we need people to show up and testify against it. It has been assigned to the House kill Committee State, Military and Veterans Affairs, and we want this bill to die so it won't rear it's ugly head again.

Attend a committee hearing for HB17-1328: Require Candidates to Disclose Income Tax Returns on May 01 at 1:30. We are in support of this bill, which has been assigned to the Senate kill Committee for State, Veterans and Military Affairs. This bill requires all Presidential Candidates running for office in Colorado to disclose their tax returns. We expect that this bill will be killed, but those who can should testify. Let's have a presence to show our support!

National Actions

Call everyone about H.R. 1628: The American Health Care Act of 2017! Tell your representatives to oppose the repeal of Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) and the defunding of Planned Parenthood along with other important health care programs. It's possible that the House could vote on this bill as early as Monday 5/1, so make sure you call your reps ASAP. Demand that your reps "save the ACA provisions that the constituents need!" You can focus on specific examples like:

  1. Keep insurance available for all.
  2. Cover pre-existing conditions.
  3. Samerates for senior citizens as others.
  4. Coverage for essential health conditions.

The group 5 Calls also has a great primer and script for calling our own reps. Additionally, one of our Indivisible Boulder members even recommends calling our neighboring districts' representatives, who may be on the fence about the healthcare bill. He provided the following script:

TARGET: Coffman: ALL voicemail boxes
PURPOSE: "We heard from your mouth that you said you would protect pre-existing conditions. Will you? Vote NO on this bill."

• DC: 202.225.7882
• Aurora: 720.748.7514

TARGET: Tipton: ALL voicemail boxes
PURPOSE: "You have said that you would protect pre-existing conditions. Will you ensure that not a single person loses their current access through the actions you take on healthcare? Vote NO on this bill."

• DC: (202) 225-4761
• Alamosa: (719) 587-5105
• Durango: (970) 259-1490
• Grand Junction: (970) 241-2499
• Pueblo: (970) 241-2499

Celebrate small victories like the White House backing down on asking for funding for a border wall (for now), and keep the pressure on your representative to resist bill riders in the new spending bill. Riders to watch out for are things like " any efforts to roll back women's health protections, Wall Street reform, environmental regulations or create a 'deportation force.'" (Source: The Hill) Let your reps know that these "poison pill" bill riders and the threat of a government shutdown won't be tolerated. The group 5 Calls has an excellent primer on the issues and a script for calling your reps.
