5/22 Weekly Call to Action

Each week, we'll gather the week's most relevant advocacy actions, legislation, and events so that we can target our actions to have the most impact. We'll bring in happenings at the local, state, and national level from several sources so you can have a one-stop shop for your information and advocacy actions. If you come across an item to include in an upcoming Call to Action post, please send us a link through the Contact form on this site. Thanks for your advocacy!!

This week, we want to keep up pressure on the issues that have arisen in the last few weeks: the independent, special-council investigation into the Trump Administration's ties to Russia and the repeal and replacement of Obamacare. Let's keep up the resistance - it's WORKING!

Call to Action - Do these things!

Local Actions

Attend the City Council public meeting Monday 5/23/2017 at 6pm in City Council Chambers (1777 Broadway) to discuss the future of Boulder's open space near CU South. The City of Boulder is discussing the possibility of annexing a site of land from CU Boulder in order to undertake flood mitigation efforts as well as potential development, in coordination with CU Boulder. There will be public meetings held throughout the summer and fall in order to determine a plan for this site of land. Part of the discussion is whether or not this land should remain as part of Boulder's open space or be developed in part for more housing. It's a complicated issue, but you can find out more information about the issue on the City of Boulder's website as well as from Save South Boulder, a group in opposition to the annexation. Save South Boulder also has a list of talking points, should you wish to attend and comment at the hearing.

State Actions

MIDWEEK UPDATE! Indivisible Front Range Resistance is organizing an emergency healthcare demonstration outside of Cory Gardner's Denver office!

FORM A LINE for healthcare. And yes, there will be a drone. THURSDAY 5/25 AT NOON - get yourself and two of your friends down to Cory Gardner’s Denver office (1125 17th st) - we’ll be meeting at Skyline Park, right outside the office. We’ll meet up at noon at the park and once we get enough people we will form a line from his office down the block.
Share this event with anyone who cares about defending healthcare as a right, not a privilege to be revoked by 13 very out of touch men - one of which is GARDNER.

Sign Strengthening Democracy Colorado's state ballot initiative petition to put mandatory tax return disclosure on our November ballot! One of our sister organizations is spearheading the effort to revive the tax return disclosure bill that died in the recent state legislative session. They need help spreading the word and circulating the petition. More information about the Call to Action can be found at this recent Resistance Radio story and from SDC's website.

From the Indivisible Front Range group:

Call our senators to oppose the REINS Act, which has made its way to the Senate floor! Approved by the House , the Senate must now vote on this bill. It's a complicated issue: ostensibly the bill asks for speedy Congressional approval of any major policy coming down the pipeline, which sounds like a wonderful thing. But as our Rep. Jared Polis points out, “It would basically completely tie up our government and consumer protection efforts in red tape, because every type of environmental protection and food and water protection, and everything else we do to protect people’s health and welfare would be … brought to Congress for every detail,” he says. Which is why he has voted against the bill each time it arises from the dead. Let's make sure it stays dead this time!

Keep commenting on the review of our national monuments! Our resistance is clearly working in many areas of the political arena, so let's keep that momentum going to save these special federal lands. Remember to leave your comments here on the government's public input page and check out Indivisible's talking points document to make a big impact.

Join the national Call to Action and defend the ACA in the Senate! Remember that Indivisible Colorado has a fantastic guide for actions to take to protect our healthcare rights. Check it out here; make them shake!

National Actions

From the National Indivisible Guide team:

Defend the ACA in the Senate! Our number one priority this week is to tell your Senators to oppose RebupliCare. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score is coming on Wednesday, which may kick it back to another vote in the House. Keep reminding everyone of the cost of supporting RepubliCare. You can find everything you need here. And register your die-ins and adopt-a-district events you’re holding over recess here.

Save Our Democracy! A special counsel was an important step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. We need an independent commission. Read our latest policy explainer here and keep an eye out—we may see Comey testifying before the House on Wednesday.

#HandsOff! Trump’s disaster-of-a-budget proposal should arrive Tuesday. While it won’t become law, it will kick off the budget negotiations. Don’t let Republicans cut vital programs for poor and working class Americans to pay for Trump’s wall. Tell your rep #HandsOff (we’ll have some new explainers to help this week).
