Author's Summary: A bill to authorize the Office of Fossil Energy to develop advanced separation technologies for the extraction and recovery of rare earth elements and minerals from coal and coal byproducts, and for other purposes.
IB Summary: Rare earth elements are critical components of many modern technologies like computer chips and smartphones. They are very expensive to mine and exist in small quantities in a handful of places around the world, leading some experts to argue that their availability may become limited in the near future. This bill seeks to promote the extraction of these elements from coal in order to secure the US's access to these elements in the global market.
