H.R.5058: Immigrant Witness and Victim Protection Act of 2018

Author's Summary:  To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the annual numerical limitation on U visas, to require the Secretary of Homeland Security to grant work authorization to aliens with a pending application for nonimmigrant status under subparagraph (U) or (T) of section 101(a)(15) of such Act, and for other purposes.

IB Summary:  “As a former prosecutor, I know how critical U and T visa protections are to law enforcement and immigrant communities,” said Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20). “Non-citizen victims and witnesses daring to come forward to support our criminal justice system deserve safeguarding. This bill promotes victims’ safety and encourages their continued participation in our communities.”
