S. 1520: Modern Fish Act

Author's Summary:  A bill to expand recreational fishing opportunities through enhanced marine fishery conservation and management, and for other purposes.

IB Summary:  This bill would take recreational saltwater fishing out of the jurisdiction of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, which sets catch limits and other restrictions on fisheries, based on the argument that recreational fishing doesn't significantly affect fish stocks. It would also transfer authority for monitoring stocks from NOAA to the states. It has bipartisan co-sponsors, but it is opposed by conservation groups.
